Stanford’s Online Course: Writing In The Sciences


Stanford’s Online Learning is a programme of Stanford University that provides education with OpenedX platform to students around the world by creativity and innovation in online learning. The OpenedX  in the queue of online courses is providing a new free online course ‘Writing In The Sciences’. The course topic is ‘Medicine and Health’ which teaches scientists to become more effective writers . Non science applicants can also be benefited from the training imparted in the initial four weeks, in which general principles of effective writing will be taught. This course helps students to become more effective writers by using practical examples and exercises. Topics studied under  this course include: principles of good writing, tricks for writing faster with less anxiety, the format of a scientific manuscript and issues in publication and peer review.
In the first four weeks of the course, students will learn about the principles of effective writing, examples of good and bad writing, and tips for making the writing process easier, which will also be helpful for non science students. In the next four weeks, the focus of study will be on examining issues specific to scientific writing, including: authorship, peer review, the format of an original manuscript and communicating science. Students will watch video lectures, complete quizzes and editing exercises, write two short papers and edit each others’ work.
The basic principles of good writing is to write in a clear and concise style, there should be no room for words, phrases and sentences that do not contribute anything significant. The paragraphs should be consistent, and well organized. Some of the features of writing may vary from subject to subject. Proper understanding of how the distinctive features of science writing reflect the activities and goals of science will help to become a more proficient writer of scientific writing style.Theories in the sciences are based upon precise mathematical models, specific experimental data sets, or some combination of the two. Therefore, scientists must use precise, concrete language to evaluate and explain such theories, whether mathematical or conceptual.
Course Duration
The course will start from September 24, 2013 for the duration of 8 weeks and students should require to spend 4 to 8 hours per week for this course.

About Instructor
The course will be taught by Kristin Sainani, Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University and also a health and science writer. He has completed MS in Statistics and PhD in Epidemiology from Stanford University and science writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is teaching Statistics and Writing at Stanford for a decade and has received several ‘Excellence in Teaching Awards’ from the graduate program in epidemiology.
Certification
Students pass with at least 60 percent will receive a certificate and those who score at least 90 percent will receive a certificate with distinction.

La Trobe’s Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students in Australia, 2014

La Trobe University is offering academic excellence scholarships (AES), targeted towards high achieving international students from all countries across all of La Trobe’s undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs. The scholarships are non-renewable tuition fee awards of A$10 000-$20 000 paid across a maximum period of two semesters (or twelve months). University of California is starting a free online course “The Power of Microeconomics” to learn all of the major principles of microeconomics. This course is taught as a quarter or semester course to undergraduates or MBA students. Course FormatThe ‘principles of microeconomics’ is a complete college and MBA-level course which will be covered in eleven online lectures. Lectures are specially designed to imitate the traditional classroom lecture experience. Topics to be covered in the lectures are supply and demand, market structures from perfect competition to monopoly, factor markets, including the labour, land and capital markets, and a study of “market failures” such as public goods.
Multimedia presentations with audio soundtrack and dynamically constructed graphs such as, determination of prices or wages through the forces of supply and demand will be used for the study. During the lectures, students can ask numerous questions and feel free at any time to put the presentation on pause as they contemplate possible answers. A complete set of the video lectures can also be ordered via email.
After each lecture, the online quiz session will be there which will be concluded with grade and quiz answers and at the end of the course students will take a final exam online to see how well they did in the course.
Students if interested can also go through the microeconomics textbook for additional background, to learn the material presented in this course. Microeconomics by McConnell, Brue, Flynn and Barbiero are the best option for reading.
Statement of AccomplishmentOn successful completion of the course, students will be awarded by Statement of Accomplishment from Coursera.
About InstructorsThe course will be taught by Professor Dr. Peter Navarro, PhD in economics from Harvard University in 1986. He is a Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine since 1988. Award of Biotechnology Overseas Associateship for Indian Citizens, 2013/14


Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is offering an overseas award for Associateship. The award is available for scientist working in any of the North-Eastern States of India. The award is offered for conducting research or training in different areas of biotechnology at overseas research laboratories. Two categories of Associateships, namely, Long-term (for a period of one year only) and Short-term (for three months) associateships are awarded. The Associate on his/her return on completion of his/her Associateship period abroad, may be required to visit the DBT and appears the Department about his/her research and training abroad under the Associateship. The application deadline is 25th September 2013.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in the areas of life sciences including biotechnology or M.D. in medicine/ M. Pharm/M.V.Sc/ M.Tech with 3 years research experience. Applicants should hold regular/ permanent positions in Government recognized research and academic institutions / universities  located in any of the North Eastern States  working continuously for the last two years and should be actively engaged in biotechnology or related R&D work. Applications from persons working in temporary positions (e.g. Research fellows or associates etc.) will not be considered. Preference will be given to the candidates who are permanent residents of any of the northeastern states.

Duration of award (s): Two categories of Associateships, namely, Long-term and Short-term Associateships are awarded. The Long-term Associateship is awarded for a period of one year only and it is not extendable. The Short-term Associateship is normally awarded for three months. However, the Short-term Associateship may be awarded for a maximum period up to six months in cases where a longer duration is necessary and justified.
What does it cover? The Long-term Associates are entitled to (a) Monthly Associateship @US$ 2000/- or its equivalent in the country of study; (b) Preparatory allowance of Rs 12,000/- (one time grant); (c) Cost of air passage in economy class by Air India for joining the overseas laboratory and back. (4) The Short-term Associates are entitled to (a) Monthly Associateship @ US$ 2400/- or its equivalent in the country of study; (b) Preparatory allowance of Rs 10,000/- (one time grant); (c) Cost of air passage for joining the overseas laboratory and back.

BBC World Service/London Met Scholarship for Postgraduate Students in UK, 2014

London Metropolitan University and BBC World Service are offering a joint scholarship programme for postgraduate students from Central Asia in February 2014. Scholarship is provided in the field of MA media and communications, journalism and international relations.
